What type / style garage is right for your home?

If you are looking to move to a new house or want to renovate your existing one, the first thing you will need to think about is curb appeal. It is your home’s first impression to the world and can make a big difference in home value or impact your decision to buy a new home. While it may be tempting to jump on the bandwagon for the latest styles and trends in garage doors, you should consider several factors before you decide.

1) What will the garage be used for?

One of the most important considerations will be the purpose of the garage, fence or gate. You may store items in your garage that cannot be exposed to light. In this case, you wouldn’t want doors with windows. This may seem obvious, but did you know the materials can also make a large difference in the temperature of your garage? If you live in a warm climate area like Southern California, an insulated garage door is best to keep the heat out on those hot days.

2) What is the style of the home?

You may want to consider the style of your home before you decide on a garage door. Although this is ultimately your decision, not considering HOAs (see below), it may affect property value in the future. If you have a Craftsman style home, a beautiful carriage door design will compliment the architecture. Modern and minimalist designs however may not necessarily be the right fit for a Spanish-style hacienda.

3) Do you have an HOA?

Sometimes there are factors that may be out of your control. HOAs often have strict guidelines that dictate color and style of elements, such as paint color or even vegetation, on the exterior of your home. Before you set your heart and make a decision on a garage door, fence or security gate, you should always check with your HOA Management company if it conforms to the CC&Rs in your community.
